Pets Help Keep Stress at Bay

You might be going through a rough time, such as the death of a loved one or a divorce. The stress, at times, seems difficult to tolerate. You want to find a way to deal with the stress effectively, but you’re uncertain of what your options might be. Then, on your daily walk, you spot a dog, and you wonder if this is the stress-reliever you’ve been looking for.

Psychologists tell us that pets can be quite beneficial to our mental health. They can provide unconditional love in a time of uncertainty. They can help to distract us from the problems of the day, giving us a new reason to go on living. And it can be quite therapeutic caring for an animal.

One obvious advantage to owning a pet is companionship. A dog or cat will always be at your heel, no matter what kind of tumultuous events you face in your life. Animals tend to be content with very little, so you don’t have to spend a great deal of time trying to please your pet.

Just petting an animal’s fur can be a good means of reducing stress. The feel of the fur can awaken in you memories of simpler times, when your stress level was much lower. It’s possible that having a pet around could even reduce your heart rate or your blood pressure.

If you owned a pet when you were young, you should not be too stressed out about caring for an animal. As long as you provide the basics—food, water, shelter, play time, and regular trips to the veterinarian, your animal should be happy and healthy. If you decide to buy a dog, your regular walks with your canine companion can be quite therapeutic. There is something so relaxing about walking a dog, especially on a crisp autumn day. You might find that the walks help you to “clear your head,” making it easier for you to cope with your problems.

When looking for a pet, you want your search to be as stress-free as possible. Talk to friends and neighbors and see if they know of anyone who’s selling or giving away a pet. You might also consult your local newspaper for ads for pets for sale. You might also consider rescuing a pet from a pound. It can be quite rewarding, knowing that you helped to save a life.

If you don’t want to have to spend so much time caring for a pet, you might consider a cat, a canary, or even a goldfish. Any pet can brighten your home, helping you to keep stress at bay. You might find that your outlook brightens as soon as you bring a pet into your home.

Say you’ve never owned a pet before. You might initially be concerned about how well you will fare as a pet-owner. In such a case, it’s helpful to educate yourself. Check out books from your local library on pet care, or see if your local humane society offers informational packets. The better educated you are, the more prepared you will be to be a pet owner.

If you live in an apartment that does not permit pets, you might consider pet-sitting at someone else’s home. This can be a welcome break from your normal routine, helping to alleviate your stress. You might also consider volunteering to walk a friend’s or relative’s dog. You’ll experience the fulfillment of volunteering your time—and you’ll make a new animal friend in the process.

In time, you might find that your pet becomes a part of your family—a treasured companion in good times and bad. You’ll learn to recognize your pets’ likes and dislikes, and you’ll probably forge a strong bond. In time, you might decide to add another dog or another cat to the family. Holiday time and other celebrations can become more festive with a pet in the house. In addition, you should find that your stress level decreases a great deal, having a pet around to keep you company. Just having a creature there to entertain you can be quite therapeutic. You may be amazed at the changes you’ll undergo, as you become accustomed to being a pet owner.

Dealing with Student Migraines in School

According to the American Council for Headache Education (ACHE), school nurses treat an average of at least ten students a month for headache complaints.  Many of these turn to be migraine headaches.  If you thought migraine was just an adult disease, consider the following statistics.

Recurring headaches occur in 38% to 83% of children 7 to15 year of age

Recurring headaches occur in 1% to 37% of children 3 to 6 years of age

Migraine headaches occur in approximately 1.2% to 11% of children.

Headaches in children is a far more serious problem that most people realize.  The truth is that most kids under eighteen have headaches several times a year, typically either tension headaches or migraines, though children certain cannot be considered immune to cluster headaches.   The frequency of migraines rises among females once they enter puberty; far more teenaged girls experience migraines than teenaged boys.  This disparity is usually linked to estrogen changes the begin with the onset of menstruation.

There are several warning signs that indicate that migraines may be a problem.   A child need not be complaining of more than a few of these in order to be concerned about the possibility that he is suffering from migraines.   Just one or two may be enough to warrant further investigation.  School is certainly an environment that is conducive to several of these symptoms and so even if a student does complain of two or three of these that also doesn’t necessarily mean that migraines are the cause. 

Be aware not only of a student complaining about things, but also the consistency and the context.  For instance, if  student exhibits signs of nausea and must leave the room suddenly to vomit, it could be a sign of a migraine, or it could just be a math test next period.   A student suffering from migraine often exhibits personality changes.  This may be unusual in elementary school, but once a student makes it to the upper levels of education, you can pretty much guarantee personality changes.   Be especially attuned to statements by the student indicating that the severity of the current headache is the worst he’s ever experienced.  This is definitely something be concerned about.   If the student is running a fever of complains about a stiff neck, a migraine could very possibly be the root the cause.

It’s very important for teachers to take an active role in identifying students who may be suffering from migraines.  Headaches, especially migraines, can seriously undermine the entire school experience.   In addition to affecting the student’s academic performance, headaches may also curtail the student’s desire and ability take part in activities and extracurricular fun.  Headaches may even be a sign of more serious trouble, from depression to a tumor.   Teachers also present a secondary authority source that may be less threatening to the student that family members; she may be more comfortable confiding about a history of headaches in you than in her parents.

Finally, there are some things a teacher can do to help students who suffer from headaches.  They won’t necessarily relieve the pain and they certainly won’t solve the problem, but they could help and they certainly won’t hurt.

 

Children and teens should drink at least 4 to 8 glasses of fluid a day so if your school policy allows permits, allow students to bring water bottles to your class.

It is recommended that children get 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night so why not help them achieve that by giving them a little extra time to get their homework done before going home, offer extra encouragement for them to get sleep.

Certain foods such processed meats, cheeses, caffeine, chocolate can trigger a migraine so if you notice your student who is suffering from headaches is constantly ingesting some or all of these, advise him to abstain.  

Stress and uncertain schedules often trigger migraines, so if you notice the student is taking on too much, arrange a conference with his parents to discuss the possibility that rearranging his schedule may contribute to lessening his headaches.

Believe the child when he complains of headaches and send him to the clinic.

Criminal Minds in Mental Health

Why do people go to jail? What caused them to behave this way? What makes them different from everyone else? We can continue asking questions about criminal’s mental health status, but we are never going to find an answer that suits us, simply because there are too many illnesses and few solutions to repairing the illnesses. In fact, some of the causes of criminal behaviors are seated on the criminal justice’s doorstep. At the beginning of criminal justice came forth a bunch of so-called law enforcement groups that claim to bring forth justice. The twisted theories including flogging, beating, hanging, dismembering, public humiliation, beheading, and the list goes on and on. Therefore, we can see the root of criminals start with the criminal justice system. We all influenced by someone else and if our superior examples are illustrating violence to others, what message are they sending to the world? In fact, the first-known psychopath was recorded in the early 1800s. This person followed the example of the justice system by behaving in manners inappropriately. Howard owned his own drug store and worked around people each day, saving lives while taking other lives and destroying them. This is similar to the justice system strategy, since the law saves lives and takes lives. We can also take a look at the various serial killers in our history and see that these people flogged, hung, beat, mutilated, public humiliated his victims, beheaded, dismembered and so forth. While each killer was different from the other, in most cases each had their own strategy to kill and torture another human. The sad part is the law in these time-tortured individuals that committed less than a felony. What a real bad example to follow, and today the law is still in some areas behaving in this manner. Rapists came in to play when the White Supremacist were allowed to rape the black race and get away with it. Although there was rape, cases before this era the White supremacist provoked sick behaviors in others as they followed closely behind the footsteps. We can ask why do people kill, and rarely find an answer since we must look at a mountain of history information to find out what the links truly are. We know that people suffer mental illnesses and some are dangerous while others are not. We can also look at the criminal justice system and see that the system is a failure in many areas, and there are people in prison that are innocent or should not be there at all. We can look at all the examples in our history and see that these people are responsible for some of the behaviors and crimes that go on in the world today. We can also look at the many minds that are locked up in the system to determine why they do what they do. We can also look at society and see how it operates and what part of responsibility they have in the many crimes and criminals actions. For example, what part do you think racism plays in mental health and crime? Well, I am studying criminal justice today and I can tell you it plays a bigger role than most people believe. What part do the media play in mental health and crime? It too plays a large role. Poverty is another major problem that links crime and mental health or illnesses together. When a person has no out, they often resort to crime, sometimes starting small and sadly most times leading to bigger crimes. However, we also have the white collar and blue-collar criminals. These people are not as special as they believe, since many criminals worked important jobs, maintained a family, and socialized in society. In fact, many of the serial killers did not come from deprived homes as claimed by the law. In fact, few came from law biding homes, and most times the person suffering is suffering because he is a child born from a hereditary nation of chaos. We can ask all types of questions but in one article we could never sum of the true colors, since the law, society, political, religions, history, mental illnesses and so on play a part in crime.

Conquering Anger

When you are conquering anger, you are taking control of your life. We all lose control from time to time, but if anger is getting the best of you each time you are rejected, frightened, or interrupted emotional then there is obviously a problem existing. If you feel, you have a problem controlling your anger you might need anger management therapy or mental health services. You might even visit your doctor to see if a medical condition is not contributing to your anger. It depends on the person, but in most instances, we all deal with distresses, stress, and aggravation most of our lives. It is learning how to deal with it that counts. Anger is an emotion than can cause us more trouble that what existed causing the problem in the first place. Self-control is often needed if two or more people are involved in a conflict. If more than one person is angered in this group then problems will occur if both parties are striking out at each other. Problems often get deeper when anger bursts occur. When anger is controlling our society, we will always have crimes, abuse, violence, health issues, heart attacks, mental illnesses, and so forth. As you can see, nothing good comes from uncontrolled anger. After careful study the statistics of angry emotions has concluded that all of us have the ability to kill, harm, injure, or sabotage another person (s) life. When a person is angry is often a result of threatened emotions, such as hurt of our self-importance, rejections, difficult to deal with prospects, and antagonistic flight of the imaginations. Most of us are selfish and will often consider self rather than considering others first. When we do not get our way sometimes, we might blow a fuse and strike at the target that made us mad. Our actions often prove failure since it leads to more problems. If both parties are screaming at each other it often instills additional anger that builds up and remains there until the opportunity is available to blow another fuse. This goes on and on and nothing is resolved. Our countries have a higher divorce rate than ever and it is often because the couples could not come to a term of agreement. Now if one person out of each home is using their head in the heat of the moment then we have a hope. We can see in one example how anger got in the way and caused a major problem. A couple is off work for the day and the man is irritable and snaps as his wife. His wife looses her cool and shouts at the husband calling him a stupid jerk. She continues to scream at him telling him that he does not respect her and finally he looses his cool and joins in the screaming match. The two argue and scream at each other for short time and then the wife turns on her heels and storms in the bedroom slamming the door behind her. She yells through the door, by the way you are sleeping on the couch tonight jerk. Now if the wife would have said honey you seem irritable is there something I can do to ease your mind. Is there a problem we can work through together? What do you think would happen if the tables were turned and the wife approached the husband lovingly and offering her support? The couple would be sleeping together in their bedroom enjoying a peaceful rest most likely. We can look at another example were the anger is a little more out of control. For example, what if the wife is menstruating and she is irritable and her husband is tired of her rejecting him. Now he approaches his wife and calls her a selfish witch. She shouts at him and tells him he is not respecting her feelings, and he then starts shouting back at the wife. The wife gets mad at her husband and slaps him across the face, punching and kicking him as her anger increases. Now we see we got a serious problem in front of us, and one or the other is leaving because they are tired of the other. Now if the couple would have took a deep breath and stayed away from the other it might have proved effective later. However, if the husband would have been supported to his wife’s emotions during her monthly cycle we would most likely had good results and a problem on top of the existing problem would not exist. Uncontrolled anger is selfish and it hurts others, therefore we must all learn how to manage our anger and emotions.

Computer Skills Self Confidence

This phenomenal technology revolution we have found ourselves a part of is sweeping the world at an alarmingly fast rate. Quite suddenly, everyday tasks we have completed without the help of technology now require the latest and fastest technology to enable the task. This great advancement in all technical fields has made the most process in the field of computers. Today’s computers are small and light enough to fit into the palm of your hand, whereas the behemoths a couple of decades ago were giant systems with monstrous proportions. Everything now seems to run off batteries and is so tiny we can fit it in our pocket. It is no surprise many individuals have seemed unable to cooperate with these advancements simply because they lack the skills necessary to successfully operate a computer or a software program. Instead of hiding from this daily advancement of technology, build your self confidence in a computer skills program.

Learning even basic computer skills will allow you to access and run operations and programs on a personal computer or Apple’s Mac. If you are completely unfamiliar with a computer, consider enrolling in an introductory course at your local college or community college. These institutions offer individuals the opportunity to learn vital facts about a computer and be able to make the necessary repairs to your system. This class is to be taken with the extreme seriousness and should not be entered into lightly. If you are unable to attend a community college, be sure to check with your year’s prefects in order to retain a section of the transmission. These subjects can be based on a number of things ranging from setting up your own home office to learning the signs of a systems crash so that you can successfully back up your files.

If you do not find a community college is right you, consider contacting your local Parks and Recreation Department. Most park departments offer lessons that are excellent for computer beginners and the novice that has a general idea of how to get around the computer. Since the city, county, or town government sponsors these seminars, they are quite economical and offer specific breaks for area city, county, or town residents. Usually, the only equipment you will need to complete the entrance into the world of the Internet is a computer and access to the World Wide Web. Individuals from all over the world can access the Internet and contact individuals hundreds of thousands of miles away. If you do not have a computer at your disposal, try using computers from places like your local library. You will be able to stay fresh with your computer self confidence while accessing the Internet for absolutely free.

The easiest way to gain self confidence when working with computers is to practice, practice, practice. Explore your computer and try to understand how the hard drive works in cooperation with all of the extra prices present. Do not worry about breaking your computer or executing one potentially hazardous program or file. You computer is a great deal more rugged than you may think, therefore it is fully capable of withstanding errors and problems that may occur while you are exploring. Practice with programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You can quickly and easily complete projects of all expectations using this software. Once you have learned the computer, the operating system, and software, you can rely on your self confidence to carry you the rest of the way. Use your self confidence to maintain a sense of trust that you are doing what is necessary in order to completely learn necessary computer skills.
